CT Politics 101

Connecticut has 19 cities, 149 towns and 1 borough. There are three forms of town government.

Mayor/Council – 32 towns

Council/Manager – 26 towns

Representative/Town Meeting – 111 towns

The 8 counties are geographical; they have no political significance.

All 169 towns belong to one of 9 Regional Councils of Government.

Glastonbury is governed by the Town Council, consisting of 9 members serving 2 year terms. The top vote getter automatically becomes the council chair.

In addition to the Town Council, the following boards are also elected by the registered voters in town:

Board of Fire Commissioners
Zoning Board of Appeals

state government

Connecticut has a governor who serves a 4 year term.  In gubernatorial election years, voters also select a lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and comptroller. Primary elections are held by each party to select the slate of candidates. Learn more.

The Connecticut State Legislature is known as the Connecticut General Assembly (or CGA). It consists of the 151-member lower Connecticut House of Representatives and the 36-member upper Connecticut State Senate.  Glastonbury has two voting districts for the House: the 13th and the 31st district.  All of Glastonbury is in the 4th district for the state senate.

Connecticut has 5 members of Congress serving in the House of Representatives and 2 senators in Washington, D.C.  Senators serve 6 year terms and representatives serve for 2 years. Glastonbury is divided into the 1st and 2nd congressional voting districts.
